Trump's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document offers a misguided assessment of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" agendas represent an grave risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger facing the EU is not societal but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data paint a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s top fifty technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Problem

This widening economic gap stems from stronger productivity growth in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly American. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is Europe stand? Experts widely concede it is essentially a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for sweeping changes.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant advantages: skilled workforce, excellent education systems, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating next-generation technologies, it can still significantly boost productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
