It's the end of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and included dozens of filler arcs. Starting in January, once the current storyline concludes, the anime will go on a three-month break until April, when the next major arc begins.
New Release Strategy
Going forward, the series will produce a pair of cours every year for a maximum of two dozen installments. Toei explains this will enable the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more content, tempo, and timing of the original manga.” Yet, Toei end by promising “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which suggests additional related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere in the interim.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The One Piece anime previously took a half-year pause that started in late 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to improve the animation quality and let the manga to get further ahead to prevent a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this respite, and it has managed to supply fans with numerous fight scenes, high-quality animation, and less filler than previously.
Adopting Modern Trends
Although some recap episodes appeared during the recent run, the benefits of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the anime. Per the news, this may lead to one episode of the series adapting one chapter, with others instead covering one and a half chapters or more to compensate for time.
It's the end of an era for anime, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the traditional method of creation, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and of course itself have numerous side stories, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between installments and the next. Nowadays, series creation is structured in cours, with a couple maximum releasing each year, enabling better quality and greater accuracy to the source material.
