PSG Defeats Marseille via Spot-Kicks to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

PSG players celebrating

The Parisian club has now secured the season-opening cup on fourteen different times.

The Parisian giants required a stoppage-time leveler followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to get past Marseille in the Gulf and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions victory.

The Champions League holders appeared to be coasting towards a straightforward win in the showdown between the French league champions and the Coupe de France winners after the French winger opened the net in the opening stages.

Yet, Marseille fired twice late to seize a shock advantage. Initially, the English forward converted from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable turn of events, the Portuguese striker grabbed a vital equaliser in the dying seconds to force the match into a deciding shootout. PSG goalkeeper Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, saving decisive kicks from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all converted with composure for PSG to seal a 4-1 penalty victory.

Now 14-time champions PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Olympique de Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now lifted this competition for the 12th time in the last 13 seasons.
