Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People using such treatments should be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of hunger.

"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
