Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are going up, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
